With a view to explore and use the plants and animals for human welfare, the Institute of Life Sciences was established in 1986. Initially, the Institute started to offer B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in two branches i.e. Botany and Zoology. In the year 1987, the Pharmacy branch was included under the Institute. The three branches were renamed in Departments as the year 1991. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology was started from the session 1998-1999.
It may be mentioned here that the Jahangirnagar University Syndicate at its 228th meeting on 21.11.2000 approved the formation of Faculty of Biological Sciences and the four Departments of the Institute were transferred to the Faculty.
During the session 2006-2007, Department of Microbiology and session 2009-2010, Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering was established under this Faculty. From the session 2011-2012, the Department of Public Health and Informatics was added under the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

The history of the Department of Botany dates back to 1983 when the authority of Jahangirnagar University (JU) decided to establish the Institute of Life Sciences. The institute was inaugurated in 1985 and began its historical academic journey in 1986 with the admission of students to the B.Sc. (Honours) programme in two sections, Botany and Zoology. In 1989, the JU authority revised the statute of the Institute, and the Botany and Zoology sections were upgraded to full-fledged departments. In 2001, the institute had been transformed into the Faculty of Biological Sciences. As a result, the Department of Botany was established as part of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Jahangirnagar University. The Department of Zoology, Jahangirnagar University started its journey in 1986 as a section of former Institute of Life Sciences and later it was upgraded to a full-fledged department under the Faculty of Biological Sciences. Now it is a leading department in the university and one of the pioneering institutes in Bangladesh in inseminating Zoological knowledge through up-to-date teaching and cutting-edge research.
The current strength of faculty of the department is 26.
