PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Md. Sharif Hossain has been serving as a Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Faculty of Biological Sciences, Jahangirnagar University, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He is dedicated to research and education for the breakthrough invention and advancement of life science technology from bench to clinic.

After completing his secondary and tertiary level education from Bangladesh, he moved to Japan and achieved his M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree from the Department of Biomolecular Engineering, Graduate School of Bioscience and Biotechnology, Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2008 and 2011 respectively as MEXT (The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan) scholar. He was then awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and conducted cutting edge research at Frontier Research Centre, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan (2011~2013). In 2014, he joined as Researcher at Biomaterials Centre for Regenerative Medical Engineering, Foundation for Advancement of International Science (FAIS), Tsukuba, Japan. By August 2014, he moved to Bangladesh and joined as an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Jahangirnagar University. He also served as the chairman at the Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, Jahangirnagar University and successfully completed his tenure from July 2017 to July 2020.

Dr. Hossain’s research interest includes the field of Nanobiotechnology, Regenerative Medicine, Gene Therapy and Drug Delivery, Stem Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials Design,  Medical Biotechnology. He developed novel nonviral vector effective for cancer gene therapy and drug delivery. Moreover, he conducted cutting edge research to develop mammalian induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell generation and guided differentiation for the regeneration of therapeutics cells. He also focused the influence of nano-biointerface on the intracellular regulation of stem cells (ES/iPS cells) for regenerative medicine and biomedical application. His current research focuses on the nanobiotechnology based approaches to overcome the challenges of antibiotic resistance. He has published more than 40 scientific articles including peer reviewed international journals, book chapters and international conferences papers.

He was the recipients of MEXT scholarship (The Ministry of  Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan) (2005~2011), Prestigious Fellowship of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) (2011~ 2013), Nucleic Acids Research Award (NAR Award) and Antisense (Kawahara) Award from Oligonucleotide Therapeutic Society, OTS (USA) (2009), Award of Excellence from Toin International Symposium on Biomedical Engineering, (Japan) (2007), Murakami Scholarship, Tokyo Institute of Technology, (Japan) (2008~ 2011), Bangladesh Education Leadership Award as Best Professor in Genetic Engineering Studies  from World Education Congress (2019).
