SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Have earned a PhD degree with the dissertation entitled, “Salinity Intrusion and Food Security: Evidence from Three Food Systems in South-western Bangladesh”, from the University of Leeds, UK, in 2013.
Have extensive teaching experience at the university level in a number of areas of Economics: Econometrics, Mathematical and Quantitative methods, Macroeconomics, and Environmental & Resource Economics.
Have reasonable amount of research experience, from conducting extensive field surveys to processing data, to analyzing the quantitative and qualitative data, and to writing research papers and research reports.
Have extensive experience in applying Econometric Modeling and using Statistical Techniques. In addition, have good amount of experience in applying the techniques of participatory research tools viz. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA), Focus Group Discussion (FGD), Analytical Hierarchy Methods (AHM), Participatory Vulnerability Assessment (PVA), etc.
Have working experience with academia, research organizations, NGOs, government officials, cooperating agencies, consultants and researchers from a number of developed and developing countries around the world.
Earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree in Economics from the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 2002, with coursework and a dissertation entitled, "Canada's Potential Output and Real Output Gap since NAFTA: Estimates and Forecasts".
Obtained a Master of Science (MSc.) degree and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Economics from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, in 1996 and 1994, respectively.

Research Experience
- Completed the PhD dissertation on “Salinity Intrusion and Food Security: Evidence from Three Food Systems in South-western Bangladesh” and submitted to the University of Leeds, UK, in April, 2013.
"The research involved collecting primary data using a detailed structured questionnaire, from 385 households of five areas in south-western Bangladesh along a salinity gradient with varying exposures to an adverse environmental condition — salinity intrusion, and conducting 5 focus group discussions; analyzing quantitative data using sophisticated statistical tools; and developing and estimating econometric models. The quantitative results on household food security and vulnerability to food insecurity have also showed important implications for the coastal region under climate change."
- Worked as a consultant in a study “Bangladesh: Investment Climate Assessment 2006” sponsored by South Asia Enterprise Development Facility (SEDF, IFC), the World Bank, and DFID, UK, from January 2007 to August 2007.
- Worked as a core team member in a South Asian regional study entitled, “Characterization of Food Systems in the IGP-5 (Indo-Gangetic Plain -5) Region”.
- The research encompassed field-level data from 600 households from five districts of Bangladesh, under a global umbrella project on Global Environmental Change and Food Systems (GECAFS), conducted by the Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford, UK, in collaboration with the joint research program of International Geosphere-Biosphere Program (IGBP) and International Human Dimensions Program (IHDP), from October 2005 to December 2006.
- Worked as a consultant for Sustainable Development Research Centre (SDRC) in a field-level study, commissioned by Actionaid Bangladesh, on Assessing Vulnerability to Climate Change, covering four most environmentally vulnerable areas in Bangladesh from August- November 2005.
- Worked as a co-researcher in another field-level study on “Understanding Agricultural Coping Strategies of Vulnerable People in the Coastal Areas of Bangladesh” commissioned by Actionaid Bangladesh, in September — October 2005.
- Worked as a consultant for AcNielsen Bangladesh, under a UNFPA project on Adolescent Reproductive Health, during November-December 2004.
- Assisted Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP) to organize a series of 24 workshops in an attempt to capture Citizens’ Perspectives on Sustainable Development in 2002, as a preparatory activity on behalf of the Civil Society of Bangladesh prior to the World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The workshop outcomes were synthesized and a book was published by BUP in 2002 with some contribution from me.
- Had undertaken the MA research on “Canada’s Potential Output and the Real Output Gap since NAFTA: Estimates and Forecasts”, in the Department of Economics, University of Waterloo, Canada from May- September 2002.
- Gathered research experience and written a number of case studies, and a major research paper while undertaking a course entitled “Entrepreneurship and Intrapreneurship: Managing New Technology-based Firms” at the Department of Management Science, University of Waterloo, Canada in 2002.
- Had undertaken the M.Sc. research, with primary data collected from 35 leather manufacturing units, situated in Dhaka and Chittagong, on investigating and estimating Production Efficiency, Factor Substitutability, and Capacity Utilization in the Leather Manufacturing Sector of Bangladesh, under the Master’s program of the Department of Economics, Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1995.
