Department of Physics

The condensed matter physics (CMP) research group has been one of the leading experimental research group in the department of physics at JU. All the current and previous principle investigators of CMP research lab has carried out their experimentalresearch works in collaboration with other national research laboratories and establishments. CMP lab as an experimental researchgroup always has difficulties in conducting their research projects due to lack of research instruments and lab facilities in the department of physics. Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Hossain, the principle investigator of CMP research group and Prof. Dr. Farid Ahmed put lots of efforts over the years to conduct experimental research works in collaboration with research groups of Dr. Mubarak Ahmed Khan of Atomic energy research establishment, Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Hashan Bhuiyan from the dept. of physics at BUET, Dr. Abdul Gafur of PP & PDC at BCSIR, Mr. Mashudur Rahaman and Mr. Muhammad Shahriar Bashar from IFRD at BCSIR. They have been constantly collaborating on various research project on solar cell, composite materials, magnetic materials and so on and publishing their research findings regularly in various peer reviewed esteemed international journals like Journal of polymer composite published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Journal of reinforced plastics & polymer composite and Journal of composite materials published  by SAGE Publications, Journal of polymer and environment, Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry published by Springer, Applied surface science, Journal of Alloys and Compounds, Results in physics by Elsevier publishers. In 2017, the CMP research lab has been refurbished and modernize with new experimental research instruments through the HEQEP sub-project CP-3415 thanks to Professor Dr. Tahmina Ferdous, SPM  of the project. In order to continueresearch works on solar cell CMP lab has set a material synthesis room with the basic synthesis facilities and purchased UV-Vis Spectroscopy and Impedance analyzer for the optical and electrical characterization of the as prepared thin film solar cells. CMPresearch lab also investigate the feasibility of recycling and reusing plastics bottles into composite materials for various practical applications. For the preparation and characterization of different composites materials  a composite fabrication room has been set up with Planetary Ball Mill, injection molding, hot compression machine etc. The postgraduate students are actively using the facilities available in CMP research lab like the Impedance Analyzer, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Spin-Coater, Ball Milling machines, Hot-compression machine etc. for their MS thesis, MPhil and PhD research projects. Students are using the material synthesis lab for preparing their newly proposed samples (e.g., thin films, ferrite, composites etc.) thanks to HEQEP subproject CP 3415. Under the subproject these research lab is equipped with many chemicals and reagents and other synthesis tools for sample preparation. All these facilities enabled faculties to choose cutting edge research topics and fabricate materials like graphene and graphene based composites using these synthesis and fabrication facilities.

Since 2015, about 23 MS students have successfully completed their master’s thesis using research facilities available in the CMPand CP research labs, many of whom are now working as faculties of physics in different public and private universities and also doing higher studies (MS/PhD) in abroad (USA, Canada and Hong-Kong). These research labs has been greatly used by the MS thesis students and are still being used actively. 

Currently (in 2017-2018 academic session), 19 MS thesis are actively engaged in their research works in the CMP and CPresearch lab. There are currently 5 MPhil students working in these research labs. Five of the ex-students of JU at the department of physics who did their MS thesis using facilities of CMP and CP research lab, established through the HEQEP subproject (CP 3415), are currently employed as lecturers of physics in different academia e.g., Barisal University, BUTEX, Daffodil International University, NITER etc. They are still engage in different research project and conducting research works using all those newly built facilities including the HP high performance computing server.
