The history of the Department of Botany dates back to 1983 when the authority of Jahangirnagar University (JU) decided to establish the Institute of Life Sciences. The institute was inaugurated in 1985 and began its historical academic journey in 1986 with the admission of students to the B.Sc. (Honours) programme in two sections, Botany and Zoology. In 1989, the JU authority revised the statute of the Institute, and the Botany and Zoology sections were upgraded to full-fledged departments. In 2001, the institute had been transformed into the Faculty of Biological Sciences. As a result, the Department of Botany was established as part of the Faculty of Biological Sciences at Jahangirnagar University. Now, this department is well-established as the forerunner in the arena of contemporary Plant Sciences in this country. In each academic year, this department enrolls 65 students in the 1st year of its four-year B.Sc. (Honours) programme and usually, all of them are admitted to M.Sc. programme. Currently, this department has 26 academic and 16 non-academic staff, seven well-equipped laboratories, four multi-media-equipped classrooms, one seminar library, a standard office room, a herbarium, a botanical garden, a plant conservatory, and broadband Internet access.
