PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Haroon Ar Rashid Khan, also known as Dr. Rashid Haroon, is a distinguished theatre practitioner and professor in the Department of Drama and Dramatics at Jahangirnagar University. With over three decades of experience, he specializes in stage production, stage and television acting, scriptwriting, and set design. Dr. Rashid's expertise encompasses traditional acting theories and practices, theatre for development, forum theatre, popular theatre, ethnic theatre, and puppet theatre.

Having earned a Ph.D. in Drama and Dramatics from Jahangirnagar University, Dr. Rashid completed his doctoral research on the content and form of puppet theatre in Bangladesh. He also holds an M.A. in Drama (Direction) from Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata, India, and an M.A. in Bangla from Jahangirnagar University. His educational journey includes a B.A. in Bangla from the same institution, along with H.S.C. (Science) from Adamjee Cantonment College and S.S.C. (Science) from Nowab Habibullah Model High School.

Since 1991, Dr. Rashid has been an esteemed member of the faculty at the Department of Drama and Dramatics at Jahangirnagar University, gradually ascending to the position of Professor in March 2010. Throughout his teaching career, he has imparted knowledge in various areas such as play direction, set and lighting design, theatre training, voice acting, and research.

Dr. Rashid is also recognized as the founder and Executive Director of the Puppet Theatre Research and Development Centre of Bangladesh (PTRDCB), a pioneering institution dedicated to the study and promotion of puppetry in the country. His extensive research on traditional puppet theatre in Bangladesh has contributed significantly to the field, culminating in his doctoral work.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Rashid actively engages in puppet theatre productions, directing and designing performances that touch upon themes like child education, social awareness, and psychotherapeutic puppet plays. His productions have garnered acclaim both domestically and internationally.

As an accomplished author, Dr. Rashid has written several books and research works on puppet theatre and related topics. Notable publications include "Traditional Puppetry of Bangladesh," "Abdus Samad: Biography and Works," and "Selim Al Deen’s Play Direction: Aesthetics and Art Form." His research on puppet theatre has been widely published in renowned journals and newspapers.

Dr. Rashid has also ventured into the world of media, showcasing his talent through appearances in television mega-serials, teleplays, and advertising films. His acting skills and versatility shine through his voice acting and dubbing work.

Throughout his career, Dr. Rashid Haroon has received numerous awards and accolades for his exceptional contributions to the field of theatre. His visionary leadership and dedication have played a vital role in the development and promotion of puppet theatre and theatre as a whole in Bangladesh.

RESEARCH INTEREST

Dr. Rashid Haroon's research interests encompass a diverse range of topics within the theatre and performing arts field. His primary focus lies in exploring the rich cultural heritage of Bangladesh, with a particular emphasis on traditional puppet theatre. Through his research, Dr. Haroon aims to document, preserve, and promote this unique art form, shedding light on its historical significance and contemporary relevance. Additionally, he is deeply engaged in the realm of theatre for development, utilizing the power of performance to address social issues, foster dialogue, and empower marginalized communities. Dr. Haroon's expertise extends to various forms of theatre, including forum theatre, popular theatre, ethnic theatre, and scriptwriting for puppet theatre. He also delves into the technical aspects of theatre production, such as set design, lighting, and visualizing scripts. With a strong background in theatre training and voice acting, he explores effective methods of teaching and developing theatrical skills. Dr. Haroon's research contributions further extend to areas such as media acting, theatre history, and tradition, puppetry as a medium of education, and the modern staging of traditional Bengali theatre. Through his interdisciplinary approach, he seeks to deepen our understanding of theatre's transformative potential and its role in society.
